Volunteer
Our Lady of Salem is a volunteer-driven organization. People from all facets of our community give their time each night to ensure our guests receive the welcome and care they deserve.
Don’t drive at night or would like to help in a different way? Please reach out to Kristen P. Machado, kpmachado@ourladyofsalem.org. We have lots of outside-the-box opportunities!
Men are welcome to volunteer. Please use the restroom before arrival as ours are reserved for women only.
Minimum age for volunteering is 16 accompanied by an adult.
Please lock your valuables in your car.
We encourage volunteers to join our guests during dinner (if there is enough food, please feel free to grab a plate).

Dinner volunteers provide our guests with a hot meal in an atmosphere of hospitality.
• Dinner must arrive ready to serve at 6:30 pm. There is no cooking on-site; however, you may use the warming cabinets.
• The meal must be hearty with large portions as this meal keeps our guests full throughout the night.
• Entrée, side dishes, drinks, and dessert need to be provided.
• Please bring plates, silverware, napkins, cups, and whatever you need to serve the dinner.
• Dinner volunteers will serve/plate the meal for our guests and will help to clean up after dinner.
• Providing a complete meal for 25 is a significant task, and not one that should be undertaken by a single person. Please partner with others to make the cost and the labor more manageable.
• Minimum number of volunteers is two and the maximum is five. (Having a large volunteer group present makes our guests uncomfortable, so please abide by this rule).
• Protein is critical for our guests’ diet, so please make sure that any meatless entree contains an alternate form of protein.
• Firm fruits or vegetables may be hard on teeth that receive little or no dental care.
-
Check-in volunteers prepare the space by laying out mats and pulling bins.
• They provide welcome when guests arrive.
• These volunteers locate guests’ bins and exchange their personal effects for bedding.
• Check-in volunteers must be fully mobile and able to lift 25 lbs.
• Volunteers with physical limitations are invited to sign-up for hos

Hospitality volunteers staff our hospitality room, which houses pajamas, toiletries, medications, etc, providing our guests with what they need in a welcoming manner.
• They will dispense over-the-counter medications to guests and log who has received how much and which medication.
• These volunteers will sort and put away any donations left at the shelter.
• We encourage volunteers to join our guests during dinner (if there is enough food, please feel free to grab a plate).
• These positions do not require lifting.
-
• To-go bag volunteers provide meal replacement “to-go” bags for guests to take with them as they leave in the morning.
• Please write the date the bags were created on each individual bag with permanent marker.
• Contents should include any required utensils and be packed in gallon plastic bag or brown paper bag.
• Suggestions: dry sandwiches with meat and cheese, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt cups, soft fruits, chewy granola bars, cheese crackers, applesauce or fruit cups, bottle of water.
• These bags are designed to get our guests through a full day, so providing at least five items, especially a protein, is imperative.
• Please avoid any hard foods (such as apples, crunchy granola bars, etc) as many of our guests have dental problems.
• Please bring 25 to-go bags to Drake Hall kitchen between 6:15 and 7:15 pm.
• Bags should be delivered the day they are signed up for to be given out the following morning. For example: If you sign up for December 1, please bring the bags the night of December 1 to be given out on December 2.
